A Cancellation Certificate is issued by NADRA when an identity document (CNIC, NICOP, CRC, or POC) needs to be formally cancelled. There are five types of cancellation: death of the holder, surrender of Pakistani nationality, POC cancellation (dual nationality or resumption), POC cancellation (divorce), and DUP clearance for duplicate identity cards.
Cancel the CNIC/NICOP/CRC of a deceased family member
For Pakistanis who took citizenship of a non-dual-nationality country
Cancel your POC when you acquire a new dual-nationality or resume Pakistani citizenship
Pakistani spouse must cancel their ex-spouse's POC after divorce
If you have been issued more than one identity card/CRC with different numbers, cancel the extra one
First identify which type of cancellation applies to your situation — death, nationality surrender, POC divorce, POC resumption, or DUP clearance. Each has different document requirements and fees. Important: If cancelling due to death, the family has 60 days from the date of death to complete the cancellation. Delays may cause legal complications.
Documents vary by cancellation type (see the table above). In all cases: • Bring originals AND photocopies • For death cancellations: the original CNIC of the deceased (if available) must also be surrendered • For overseas Pakistanis doing DUP clearance: submit by email to dup.op@nadra.gov.pk with affidavit and fee payment receipt
Visit the nearest NADRA Registration Centre (NRC) with your documents. For nationality surrender or POC cancellations from abroad, visit the nearest Pakistani embassy or consulate. For DUP clearance from overseas: submit the application and documents by email to dup.op@nadra.gov.pk.
DUP clearance fees depend on whether the records have similar or different particulars. See below.
NADRA will issue a formal Cancellation Certificate once the cancellation is processed. Keep this certificate safe — it is the official record that the identity document has been cancelled. This is required for inheritance (FRC processing), legal matters, and proof of nationality change.
